Please Help Support Cuba’s Medical Professionals & Health Care Workers!
Personal Protective Equipment Needed. A People to People Effort for Pittsburgh’s City Sister of Matanzas, Cuba

PITTSBURGH HAS HAD A LONGSTANDING AND ACTIVE SISTER CITY engagement with Matanzas, Cuba. Several hundred Pittsburgh area residents, elected officials, university personnel, business people and tourists have traveled to Cuba. Doctors and nurses from Cuba have travelled to over 30 nations to combat infectious diseases as a humanitarian principle and policy including recent efforts to combat the effects of COVID 19. Now Cuba needs our support. We have set a goal of raising $13,000 to equip and protect all medical professionals in Matanzas.
There are 6,534 medical professionals in the province of Matanzas and the personal protective equipment (PPE) we hope to provide includes badly needed sterile gloves. Currently medical professionals wash and re-use them due to shortages. PPE such as “bunny suits” and N95s will help protect healthcare workers who are caring for COVID and other patients. We all know that hand washing is critical in maintaining patient and worker safety. Basic items like soap combined with diligent cleaning with hospital disinfectant spray and wipes are essential to minimizing the transmission within health care facilities.

As we kick off this fundraising campaign we are pleased to report that $9,500 has been raised in early contributions, but we still need your help to reach our $13,000 fundraising goal.

Our campaign is guided by our humanitarian values made all the more necessary given the pain and suffering of the pandemic. Recently, our sister city organization and family witnessed the passing of long time Board Member Jose Moreno, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Sociology Department, University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Moreno was born in the small town of Sagua La Grande, Cuba and in his 93 years was heralded in his role as a Jesuit priest early in his life, and later a teacher, author, scholar and progressive voice who worked tirelessly for world peace and our common humanity.
